The Manson Northwest Webster and Newell-Fonda girls will put their state tournament aspirations on the line tonight in the regional basketball final round.
The sixth-ranked Cougars (21-2 overall) take on No. 7 Panorama (22-2) for a Class 2A, Region 2 championship in Rockwell City. Meanwhile, the second-rated Mustangs (21-2) square off with unranked Northwood-Kensett (17-7) for the Class 1A Region 2 crown in Algona.
Both contests begin at 7 p.m.
MNW is trying to get back to state for the first time since advancing four consecutive years from 2007-10. The Cougars are led by the state's second-leading scorer, University of Northern Iowa-bound junior Ellie Herzberg (25.7 points per game) and freshman Faith Troshynski (13.5).
MNW hasn't lost since Dec. 14. Head coach Bret Larson's squad was the co-Twin Lakes Conference champion.
Panorama's top offensive threats include junior Olivia Godfrey (15.0), senior Sidney Beckman (12.7) and senior Cadence Simmons (10.0). Godfrey, a 5-foot-11 all-stater, also averages eight rebounds per game.
Newell-Fonda is anchored by junior guard Renee Maneman (17.7), senior post Andrea Christensen (10.6) and junior center Claudia Larsen (8.8 points, 6.3 rebounds). Like MNW, head coach Dick Jungers' Mustangs have been state tourney regulars in recent years, qualifying in 2010 and '11. They shared the TLC crown with the Cougars this season.
Freshman Hattie Davidson (11.8) and sister Maren Davidson (10.7) - a senior - power the Vikings, who upset No. 15 Clarksville 51-50 to advance in the last round. N-K has won six straight heading into Monday's tilt.
