16 area wrestlers place

DES MOINES - Competing on the last day of state wrestling action, a total of 16 Messenger-area individuals reached the podium from the consolation round.

Highlighting the action inside Wells Fargo Arena was one third-place showing and three fifths.

CLASS 1A

Clarion-Goldfield

No. 9 junior Taylor Lehman (132 pounds) placed fifth after escaping with a 2-1 victory over Midland's fifth-ranked Kyle Pegorick. Lehman (36-9) also edged Pegorick by a 5-4 count in an ultimate tie-breaker in the quarterfinals.

Making his third straight state trip, eighth-ranked junior Mitch Gambrill (285) also finished fifth. Gambrill (25-10) was pinned (:37) by No. 2 Chris Schleuger of West Hancock in the consolation semifinals, before rebounding with a 5-1 decision against Graettinger-Terril's Cody Thompson.

Emmetsburg

Top-ranked senior Andrew Wellik (182) checked in third for the E-Hawks. Wellik (41-1) followed up a pin (1:13) of St. Edmond's Dillon Nelson with a 7-1 victory over No. 4 Gunnar Clark of West Hancock.

Tyler Leuer (132) was eighth. Leuer (13-6) suffered a 13-3 setback to Wilton's sixth-ranked Logan Mays.

Brady Bailey (152) settled for seventh. The fifth-ranked senior Bailey (18-5) blanked Aplington-Parkersburg's 10th-ranked Blake Pruisner, 2-0.

Tayler Wegner (220) placed sixth after dropping a 4-3 decision to No. 8 Michael Davidson from Ridge View. Wegner (39-9) previously lost a 10-0 major decision to St. Edmond's No. 1 Vinnie Harvey.

Wellik was third at state a year ago, while Bailey was fifth.

Manson NW Webster

For the Cougars, No. 2 junior Payton Rice (138) finished fifth. After dropping a 4-1 decision to fourth-ranked Colton Martin of Alburnett, the three-time state qualifier Rice (47-3) bounced back with a 13-8 sudden-death overtime triumph against Sumner-Fredericksburg's No. 3 Brady Meyer.

Rice, who was a runner-up here a year ago, now owns a career mark of 127-13.

CLASS 2A

Humboldt

Junior Nikko Wheeler (182) was sixth for the Wildcats. Wheeler (40-12) was pinned by seventh-ranked Jay Reisetter of East Marshall/GMG and Knoxville's No. 8 Cole Spaur in times of 3:51 and 2:44, respectively.

No. 2 junior Reed Dreyer (195) also placed sixth. Dreyer (38-7) was upset in a 4-3 decision by sixth-ranked Alex Macki from Ballard. He later came out on the short end of a 9-7 sudden-death overtime loss to Solon's No. 8 Lance Evans.

Dylan Hendricks (285) turned in an eight-place effort. The junior was upended in a 3-1 decision by Mario Pena of Hampton-Dumont.

Greene County

Jeremy Scheuermann (145) finished eighth for Rams on the heels of a 5-3 loss to Bondurant-Farrar's No. 8 Patrick Rooney. Scheuermann wrapped up his junior season 41-8.

CLASS 3A

Algona

Placing seventh for the Bulldogs were seventh-ranked sophomore Joe Teague (170) and junior Tyler Frideres (182). Teague (31-9) won by injury default over Andrew Landgrebe from Oskaloosa, while Frideres (35-11) beat Mount Pleasant's Justin Dilks, 6-3.

Kory Kuecker (138) and Weston Shaw (152) both fell short in their seventh-place bouts. Kuecker (37-6) dropped a 9-5 decision to Landon BeLieu of Indianola, and Shaw (31-10) was topped in an 8-4 decision by Mason City's No. 6 Stone Sturges.

Webster City

No. 3 junior Dylan Fielder (182) was sixth for the Lynx. Fielder (39-5) was pinned (3:37) by top-ranked Justin Kreiter from North Scott. The three-time state qualifer then later suffered a 9-5 setback to Linn-Mar's No. 6 Andrew Holladay.
