An investigation into the death of a Fort Dodge man Saturday has led police to believe the victim may not have been hurt on purpose.

Stephen Torrez, 42, 1465 17th St. S.W., was found dead at 519 Central Ave., No. 2, around 6:14 Saturday night.

Fort Dodge Police Chief Tim Carmody said Monday that "there is not sufficient evidence to indicate that foul play is a factor in this incident."

Officers responded to the apartment after getting a call about two people who weren't responding.

When they arrived, Carmody said officers found Torrez and Carrie Perez, 36, of Fort Dodge, inside the apartment. While Torrez was pronounced dead at the scene, Perez was taken to Trinity Regional Medical Center for treatment and follow-up.

Webster County Medical Examiner Dr. Dan Cole arrived on the scene and helped police with the investigation.

Carmody said both patrol officers and investigators are still looking at the case. Anybody with information is asked to call the Fort Dodge Police Department at 573-1426 or Webster County Crime Stoppers at 573-1444. Tips can also be sent online at wccrimestoppers.com or by texting "LEC" and the tip to 274637.
