ROLFE - Gregory (Greg) Dennis Kaiser, 74, of Rolfe, Iowa, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa, surrounded by his family. Greg fought a valiant 10 month battle with cancer and loved his doctors and nurses in the Cancer Centers and they loved him.

Greg and his twin brother Gary were born March 8, 1938, in Rolfe, Iowa, the day the Rolfe Boys basketball team won the State title in Des Moines. He graduated from Rolfe High School in 1957 and attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, and graduated from the University of Iowa linotype program in 1959. Greg worked at the Odebolt Chronicle and the Kearney Daily Hub in Kearney, NE. until he purchased the Rolfe Arrow in July 1963, the Rolfe Centennial Year. Greg was editor of the newspaper for 10 years.

Greg always prided himself on the accomplishments of the Rolfe projects he promoted and worked on through the Arrow. In his final editorial he said, "I have had the pleasant opportunity to witness and assist in the rapid growth of Rolfe and the farming community, namely construction of over 30 new homes, start of 15 new businesses, Sunset Hill Manor Nursing Home, retirement housing, swimming pool, improved school system and the municipal gas works and church unity."

After the Arrow was sold, Greg worked for many years at the Pro Cooperative in Rolfe, retiring in 2001. He enjoyed his retirement with daily trips to Pronto to catch up on the news, golfing, playing cards, taking pictures and helping anyone he felt needed a hand up. What he most cherished were times spent with Joan traveling and with the grandchildren particularly taking them on vacations and attending their school activities and making each grandchild feel "special."

Greg married his high school sweetheart Joan Simpson at Pocahontas Sacred Heart Catholic Church on August 6, 1960. They settled in Odebolt and then Kearney, NE. in the newspaper business. He helped start the first Boy Scout Explorer Troop in Nebraska with Father James Krystocek. Greg and Joan settled in Rolfe in 1964.

Greg's priorities all his life were God first, family, his community, the Hawkeyes, and Zach Johnson followed closely. He was a faithful member of St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Rolfe and after his retirement worked on projects to spruce up the church building. In the hot summer of 2011 Greg scraped and painted all the exterior windows of St. Margaret's and stripped and repainted the exterior statues in the garden area.

Greg was a member of the Rolfe Lions Club, the Rolfe Golf Club and the Knights of Columbus in Pocahontas.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Joan, his son John of Colo, Iowa and his daughter Suzanne (Troy) Shaner of Humboldt and seven grandchildren, the loves of his life: Jake, Bekah and Maggie Kaiser and Amanda, Christopher, Joseph and Kaylee Shaner. He is also survived by his twin brother Gary and two older brothers, Glenn and Paul, and younger brothers, Lee and Kurt.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Helmer and Evelyn Kaiser and his in-laws, Glenn and Marcella Simpson.
