It is likely new restrictions on firearms sales will be enacted by Congress in reaction to the massacre of children and teachers at a school in Connecticut.
New support for such measures is being heard, and it is coming from people who have been staunch supporters of gun owners' rights.
But new gun controls are far from the answer to violence in our society, as even thoughtful proponents of such action recognize.
More needs to be done to identify and treat those with mental illnesses that could lead to violence. School security also ought to be addressed.
New limits on gun sales will not end violence such as that which broke the hearts of many Americans in the recent past.
Other factors are at work and they, too, need to be addressed.
