FD girls stopped at home

The Fort Dodge girls basketball team was left searching for answers again Friday night.

Dropping their seventh straight game, the Dodgers (2-7 overall) opened the new year with a 43-26 non-conference setback to Des Moines Roosevelt at the FDSH gym.

Fort Dodge made only 10 field goals in the contest and was unable to overcome 26 turnovers.

"Our woes really stemmed from a lack of offensive execution and too many unforced turnovers," FDSH head coach Scott Timmerman said. "I think our confidence level goes with the flow of the game and doesn't stay at an even keel. When things start to slow down or little things go against us, we have a hard time finding a way to recover."

Lexi Astor, a 5-foot-9 junior, netted a team-high 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting for the Dodgers. Classmate Ashley Altman was next in line with five points.

"Lexi gives 100 percent all the time, and she probably had one of her best games since starting off the season hot," said Timmerman. "I was really proud of hard and fast she played (Friday)."

Down by just a single hoop entering the second quarter, Fort Dodge was held to eight points over the next 16 minutes. Despite outscoring the Roughriders (5-4) 13-8 in the final frame, the Dodgers trailed by double digits the entire second half.

"Our girls need more game experience to get skilled and comfortable at the level we need to play at," Timmerman said. "We can't expect to improve by just shooting at the (YMCA) or in the backyard."

Meredith Burkhall, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, powered Roosevelt with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Miranda Pearce grabbed 10 boards. The Roughriders, who pushed their win streak to three straight games, fired at just a 29.1 percent (16-for-55) clip from the field.

"Our gameplan coming in was to limit (Roosevelt's) inside game," said Timmerman. "For the most part, I thought we played pretty solid defense on (Burkhall)."

Next action for the Dodgers is Tuesday when they welcome Humboldt (4-6). The Wildcats dropped a 48-34 North Central Conference decision Friday to Iowa Falls-Alden.
