FARNHAMVILLE Derwood L. Harter 92, passed away Saturday, December 15, 2012 at the Hospice Suites at Stewart Memorial Hospital, Lake City. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at the First United Church, Farnhamville, with Pastor Kristina Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Reading Township Cemetery, Farnhamville, with Military Graveside Rites by American Legion Post #510 of Farnhamville. Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Palmer Funeral Home, Gowrie. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.

Derwood is survived by his daughter Linda (Larry) Nolte of Twin Lakes; daughter-in-law Lisa Harter of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Nick (Rochelle) Nolte of Farnhamville, Sara (Eli) Houpis of Danville, CA, Jeff (Amber) Harter, Steve Harter, and Mike Harter, all of Omaha; great- grandchildren, Ellie, Kinslie, and Bennett Nolte, Leo and Aris Houpis, and Briley Harter. He was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie Harter; son Gary Harter; parents, Byron and Elsie Stringer Harter; and brother Cleo Harter.

Derwood Leroy Harter was born October 11, 1920 at Rinard, Iowa. He graduated from Farnhamville High School, with the Class of 1939. Derwood served during World War II in the Air Force, and was honorably discharged in 1945. On March 13, 1948 he was united in marriage to Marjorie Miller in Farnhamville, and the couple established their home there. Derwood worked at a produce station for 30 years, and then Farmers Coop for 10 years. He then retired from U.S. Gypsum Co. in 1986, after 20 years of employment. Marjorie passed away in December of 2011. Derwood was a member of First United Church, Lions Club, and the American Legion. He also was a volunteer for the Farnhamville Fire Department for 50 years, as an EMT.
