WEBSTER CITY - Fort Dodge head wrestling coach Bobby Thompson left Thursday night's triangular feeling much better about where his team is headed.

After claiming the Emmetsburg Invitational championship last weekend, the Dodgers swept future Class 3A district foes Algona and Webster City on Thursday night inside the brand-new Lynx gym.

Fort Dodge topped the Bulldogs, 39-30, and Webster City, 37-29. The Lynx downed Algona to start the evening, 44-15.

The Dodgers (3-2 overall) lost narrow duals to Waukee and Johnston last Thursday, but rebounded quickly to take home team honors in Emmetsburg.

Cameron Hicks, Jonah Egli, Sam Cook and 10th-rated (220) Kyle Johnson all earned a victory apiece.

"Webster City beat Waukee last weekend, and for us to turn it around and beat Webster City, I think that shows two things. First, we took what we drilled in practice and used it. Second, we wrestled with a sense of passion and aggression," Thompson said. "The kids were upset with themselves (last Thursday), and they really worked hard to right the ship.

"We still have a long ways to go, but we want to be peaking in February, not right now."

Thompson was especially pleased with the wins picked up by juniors Hicks and Alexander, saying, "we need Cameron and Cory to continue to do what they did out on the mat. They showed everything that we have been teaching and used it to their advantage."

Birnbaum, who fell out of the latest prep rankings, earned two falls, while Detmering - just a ninth-grader - scored a pin and a major decision. Evans added a pair of falls, as did Alexander.

In the lone battle of ranked wrestlers, Egli scored a 6-0 decision over No. 10 Joe Teague from Algona. Egli earned a takedown in the first, a reversal in the second and tacked on a pair of near-fall points in the third. The senior also earned a pin against Webster City's Brandon Patten.

"This was an important set of duals for us because we will be seeing both of these teams later this year (the Dodgers host districts this year)," Thompson said. "Plus, we need to continue to gain all the momentum that we can heading into the Christmas break."

Webster City's Tanner Hild, Jake Powers, Connor Larson, second-ranked (182) Dylan Fielder and No. 10 (285) Landon Johnson all picked up two falls each. Both of Johnson's came via pin.

"We let some matches get away from us," WCHS head coach Ted Larson said. "I'm happy we beat Algona, because that was a (North Central Conference) dual, but we wanted to get both of these."

Cole Nokes, Freddie Seeley, Gage Sadler, Alex Oswald, Gus Gasca and Jared Thome each earned a victory for the Lynx, who are now 6-4 overall and 4-0 in the league.

Algona's Jake Adams and Weston Shaw went 2-0 on the night, with Adams earning two falls.

Josh Strohman, Tyler Frideres, Teague, Michael Mather and Chandler Holmes each picked up one win during the two duals.

Fort Dodge and Webster City will both take part in the Don Miller Invitational on Saturday inside the Dodger gym. The Bulldogs will take part in a tournament in Iowa Falls.
