HUMBOLDT - Some tabbed the Humboldt boys as preseason frontrunners to claim a North Central Conference title this winter.

Well, after a pair of early setbacks, the Wildcats showed why they were given such lofty expectations Tuesday night, man-handling St. Edmond, 62-45.

Humboldt (3-2 overall, 2-2 in NCC) flexed its muscle, and showed plenty of basketball skill, as well.

Michael Orness was a red-shot 7 of 10 shooting from the floor for 19 points, while Jaxon Heinz and and Bryan Larson each scored 12. The Wildcats hit on 24 of 41 field goals, including seven three-pointers, and led by as many as 21 late in the third quarter.

"It's taken us a few games to gel together, but the kids are starting to understand what we want to do," said first-year Humboldt head coach Daryl Short. "They are executing the offense and staying patient. We really preached patience (in practice) because we know that St. Edmond is a very well-coached, well-disciplined team that will make you work for everything."

The Gaels (3-2, 3-2) were handed their second consecutive loss after winning three in a row to start the year. They led only briefly in the first quarter, as Robby Burke scored 17 and grabbed six rebounds. St. Edmond's other four started combined to go 4-for-15 from the field and tallied 13 points.

"We just really preached patience," Short said. "Michael, Jaxon and Bryan all reaching double figures showed that we worked the offense and made the attempt to find the open man.

"Everything seemed to be clicking (Tuesday night); now, we just need to continue to build confidence."

St. Edmond head coach Adolph Kochendorfer had the opposite feeling as Short, saying, "these kids need to learn how to deal with adversity. They were beaten up and things weren't going our way, and they didn't react well to that.

"We have a long way to go, and we have a lot of things we need to work on."

The Gaels will play two more games this week, travelling to Clear Lake Friday night before returning home to face non-league opponent South Hamilton Saturday.

Humboldt faces Clarion-Goldfield inside the Wildcat gym Friday evening.
