Iowa Central men struggle in league opener

Offensive struggles derailed any upset hopes by the Iowa Central men's basketball team on Saturday.

Facing 11th-ranked (NJCAA Div. II) Des Moines Area in their ICCAC opener, the Tritons (6-5 overall, 0-1 in the league) suffered a 64-55 setback at Hodges Fieldhouse.

Iowa Central was held to just 14 points before the intermission and fired at a 33.9 percent (21-for-62) clip from the field for the game.

"Right now, we just have a lot of indecisiveness on the offensive end," ICCC head coach Dennis Pilcher said. "We don't know when to shoot, pass or dribble (the ball). I was pleased with our defensive effort, but we could never really put anything together offensively."

Deion Isham netted a game-high 17 points for the defending Region XI champion Tritons, hitting 7 of 16 shot attempts.

Rhys Elliot also tallied 15 points for Iowa Central, including 10 in the second half. Jesse Jones, Jawad Adekoya and Jaleel Gray all chipped in seven points for the blue and white.

After trailing by as many as 21 points midway through the second half, Iowa Central used a 27-14 spurt to trim the once seemingly insurmountable deficit to just eight (55-47) on a Jones longball at the 2:05 mark. The Tritons would get no closer the rest of the way, however, as nine free throws by the Bears in the final 1:01 sealed the deal.

"We stayed with (DMACC) and worked hard all the way until the end," said Pilcher. "When you give up 64 points you should have a good chance to win, but we just shot the ball too poorly (yesterday)."

Darry Jones (14), TJ Davis (12), LaTree Russell (11) and Derek Williams (11) each scored in double digits for the visitors. DMACC (11-3, 1-0) went 26-for-34 at the charity stripe compared to only 6 of 10 for the Tritons.

Aiming to rebound, Iowa Central returns to the court Friday at the William Bear Classic in Freeport, Ill.
