Costly turnovers and shooting woes plagued the Fort Dodge girls basketball team again Tuesday night.

Held in check offensively from start to finish, the Dodgers (2-2 overall) dropped a 55-29 decision to West Des Moines Dowling inside the FDSH gym.

After trailing by the slimmest of margins entering the second quarter, the Dodgers were victimized by a 19-4 Maroon run over the next eight minutes and were left playing catch-up the rest of the way. Fort Dodge finished with 34 turnovers and shot only 28.9 percent (11-for-38) from the field.

"Where it gets frustrating is for glimpses we've shown that we can play with anybody," FDSH head coach Scott Timmerman said. "I don't think (the Maroons) really upped their intensity that much (in the second period), but it was more about our own self-inflicted mistakes. We're not at the point right now where we can coast against any teams, so it has to be a consistent effort. We're still having those moments when people are choosing to rest out on the court."

Junior Lexi Astor paced the Dodgers with seven points and eight rebounds, while classmate Tiana Mericle collected six points and eight boards. Sophomores Lani Van Zyl and Mallory Kilian each added five points.

"Lexi bounced back and had a better game (Tuesday) than at Sioux City (West on Friday in a 62-48 FDSH setback)," said Timmerman. "Mericle really flashed her potential, too, and showed how good she can be. She's starting to make all her shots now when she gets the ball in close (to the hoop)."

Hayden Butler (12) and Becca Hittner (10) each reached double digits in scoring for unbeaten Dowling (3-0), which has prevailed over its first three opponents by a combined total of 110 points. The Maroons fired at a 32.9 percent clip from the floor (23 of 70) and pulled down 21 offensive rebounds.

"Once we got down, I didn't think we came out in with the same type of intensity in the second half (the Dodgers went scoreless for the first 4:38 after the break)," Timmerman said. "We just didn't look like we were ready to fight and claw like we did earlier in the game."

Fort Dodge opens Central Iowa Conference Northern Division play Friday at Marshalltown (1-4). The Bobcats were hammered by No. 8 (Class 5A) West Des Moines Valley last night, 73-34.
