"It's definitely nice get all 14 in the top four. That's a good showing," said Ewing.

Fort Dodge crowned a pair of champions and had a pair get second as well.

Senior Duke Egli looked impressive in winning the 170-pound title. He pinned his first two foes in the first period then blanked Joe Teague of Algona, 9-0, in the finals. Emmetsburg's Nick Shany, who won last year at 170, did not wrestle Saturday.

Fort Dodge's other champion was Erik Birnbaum, who won the 106-pound title with a fall in 1:59 against top-seeded Dylan Spora of Eagle Grove in the finals.

"Our upperclassmen are leading by example. They are being more vocal and providing nice leadership," said Fort Dodge coach Bobby Thompson. "Everybody placed here, which is nice. We have a long way to go and we've got a lot to learn, but I am pleased with what we've done after one week."

Two Dodger freshmen made the finals, but came up short. Cole Determing lost to Ankeny's Noce in the 113 final while Sam Cook lost to Ankeny's Dahlman in the finals at 182.

Dodger freshman Jonah Egli dropped his first match at 138, but came all the way back for third place while freshman teammate Kole Kampen finished third at 152. The Dodgers' other freshman, Willie Moretz, was sixth at 160.

"I am real pleased with how our young guys wrestled," said Thompson. "They all didn't get the results we had hoped for, but some of them made some freshman mistakes. But we can correct those as the season goes. They have the mindset they want to be successful. They are an easy bunch to coach."

Fort Dodge also got third-place finishes from Riley Prescott at 220 and Kyle Johnson at 285. Kole Evans was fourth at 120 while Cory Alexander (132) and Matt Osborne (145) were fifth. Cameron Hicks finished sixth at 126.

Algona got championships from Jake Adams at 126 and Kory Kuecker at 138 while Weston Shaw (152), Tyler Frideres (160) and Teague (170) were all second.

Ballard claimed three titles. Mitchell Broer won at 132, Dillon Evans at 145 and Alexi Macki at 195. Emmetsburg's Tayler Wegner won the 220-pound title.

The meet featured 19-ranked wrestlers and also included a probable first: a female wrestler. Ballard's Rachel Watters wrestled for the "JV All-Stars" at 132, but did not place.

Fort Dodge's Nic Ganzeveld was third for the JV All-Stars at 113 pounds. He pinned the No. 2 seed in the first round before losing in the semifinals.

Several of these teams will be wrestling next Saturday at Emmetsburg, including the Dodgers. Fort Dodge wrestles a triangular on Thursday at Waukee against the Warriors and Johnston.
