To the editor:
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank The Messenger for its great coverage of the Olympic swimmers and the clinic they put on for our youths. This was accomplished in large part by Jason Major and the Fort Dodge Swim Club and a host of sponsors. The kids really got a lot out of it with Jimmy Fegin, Ian Crocker and Dabny Knutson. I especially thought that Dabny showed a lot of concern for all levels when one of the younger swimmers got nervous and was a bit upset. The highlight was when they got to race the Olympians. I, as a coach, enjoyed it because it reinforced a lot of what we currently tell our swimmers. I also enjoyed seeing some of the previous swimming families at the Friday dinner with the Olympians - the Garst family as well as the Lawson families. Both were instrumental in having the Fort Dodge Senior High pool built. It is the finest high school pool in the state. So to all of you non-swimmers, your youth did you proud - 200-plus at the dinner and 90-plus at the clinic from many of the surrounding towns. A class act by all.
