David Flattery and Aaron Chalstrom made sure to remind everyone around the state that the St. Edmond boys are not going anywhere.

Despite the graduation loss of Nick Clark and Neil Flattery, the Gaels started the 2012-13 season off with a bang, defeating North Central Conference rival Bishop Garrigan Tuesday night in an intense early-season affair, 64-46.

Flattery scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds, while holding John Burns to just 5 of 21 shooting on the night. Chalstrom added 16 points, connecting on 6 of 7 shots, including a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range.

Robbie Burke added 14 points and five boards, while Eddie Doyle had five and six.

"These seniors really came out and showed great leadership," said SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer, who led the Gaels to the state championship game a year ago. "They know that the focus is on them now with the graduation losses, and I think (Tuesday) was a great sign they are prepared to take charge."

St. Edmond (1-0 overall, 1-0 in NCC) was a precise 22 of 38 from the field, while hitting 6 of 11 triples. The Gaels also out-rebounded Bishop Garrigan (1-1, 0-1), 32-26, and held a plus-eight advantage in points off turnovers.

"We knew this would be an intense game right off the bat," Kochendorfer said. "But many of these kids played last year and have been through the wars. We'll rely on those past experiences to help us through the season."

Chalstrom sank a three to start the game, as St. Edmond built a 10-0 lead before Burns finally got the Golden Bears on the board. Burns, a 6-foot-5 senior, has received preferred walk-on status at Creighton University.

Garrigan cut the deficit to just two at the start of the second, but would get no closer, as Chalstrom drained two more three-pointers.

"We've really focused on getting Aaron to drive more, but he'll always have that three-point shot to take," Kochendorfer said. "He's really improved his all-around game (Chalstrom had three rebounds and a blocked shot), especially his defensive positioning."

The Gaels closed the first half on a 19-7 burst, pushing their lead to as many as 12 in the third.

Garrigan made things interesting with a 7-2 scoring run, but Flattery and Burke combined for 21 over the final 10-plus minutes to ice the game away.

Nathan Krieps added nine points, four steals and four boards for the Golden Bears, while Adam Hamilton added eight points and four boards.

St. Edmond returns to action on Friday, travelling to Clarion-Goldfield. Bishop Garrigan will host Eagle Grove.
