HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Iowa Central football team officially accepted a bid to the Salt City Bowl on Tuesday.
The Tritons (6-4 overall) will face 14th-ranked (NJCAA) host Hutchinson (8-3) Dec. 1 in the fourth annual event. Kickoff is set for 1:07 p.m. at Gowans Stadium.
"We actually turned our gear in last Tuesday, but we had our kids put their names on their helmets and shoulder pads just in case," ICCC head coach Kevin Twait said. "(Punching another bowl ticket) was a little surprising, but I think our tradition of success helped us out. (ICCC President) Dr. (Dan) Kinney also has some ties in the state of Kansas and was in our corner making calls in our favor."
Iowa Central will be making its 14th bowl appearance in the past 16 seasons. The Tritons own the nation's longest current bowl win streak at six consecutive games.
"Getting beat the way we did in our (first-round Midwest Football Conference) playoff game to Ellsworth (the Tritons dropped a 42-10 decision), we feel very fortunate to have this opportunity," said Twait. "At the same time, we're not going to apologize because Div. I programs make bowls even with a 6-6 record."
Hutchinson suffered two of its setbacks this year to unbeaten in-state rival and No. 2 Butler, including a 26-16 loss in the Region VI Championship.
The only other defeat for the Blue Dragons came at the hands of fifth-ranked Navarro (Tex).
