TECHNY, Ill. - Rev. James J. Artzer SVD passed away in Techny Illinois Nov. 1st 2012.
Dear son of John & Barbara Artzer. Services were held on Nov. 5, at Divine Word Residence where a funeral Mass was held. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery in Techny, Illinois.
Artzer attended Corpus Christi school until 1937, when he began studies for the priesthood at Divine Word Seminary in Epworth Ia. He completed studies at Seminaries in East Troy, Wisc. & Techny Ill. He was ordained there on Dec. 3rd 1950, & celebrated his first Solumn High Mass at Corpus Christi Church in Fort Dodge on Dec. 8, 1950. While most of the Society members are sent to foreign missions, Artzer was assigned to teach in societies seminaries in the U.S. After getting a masters of arts degree in classical languages, he was on the faculty of the college in Duxbury Mass. from 1958-1966. When the college merged with Divine Word College, he was given leave to finish his doctorate studies at Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.
Artzer was offered a position in University library. The next 11 years he was involved in the computerization of the library records to make them available online to all the universities of the country. In 1985 he became a university bibliographer with the responsibility for selecting the books to be acquired in several large areas - such as philosophy, religion, Western history, Greek & Latin & German. He returned as a professor emeritus in 1988.
He was called to Rome to make the archival records of the society electronically accessible. Illness prevented him from undertaking this project. Now retired he returned to Divine Word Residence.
His survivor is a sister Florence Stringer in Fort Dodge. He had 4 sisters Eva Smith, Betty Dorn, Barbara Iles, Catherine Pratt & 3 brothers, John, Adam & Joseph.
