Laments the loss of Patterson

To the editor:

The passing of Jerry Patterson brings forth bittersweet emotions. Here was a man who committed his entire life to bettering his fellow mankind. Building a ballpark where the youth of our community could participate in clean fun was a great accomplishment - but not his greatest. I knew Jerry and played ball for him in the early 1960s as a member of the Fort Dodge Demons. It was under Jerry's tutelage that a generation of young Fort Dodge men learned some of the better lessons of life. Practicing daily, clean uniforms, good sportsmanship and learning that commitment breeds success were some of the lessons learned. Under Jerry's guidance, we learned that we were expected to treat our competitors with respect and civility. We were held to a higher standard than most teenagers and for many of us those lessons learned continue to serve us on a daily basis.

I feel exceptionally blessed to have known Jerry Patterson. His many gifts will live on in our community for years to come.

Yes, Jerry: "Build it ... and they will come."
