Triton men roll

November 6, 2012
By DANA BECKER sports@messengernews.net

The 18th-ranked (NJCAA, Div. II) Iowa Central men's basketball team opened the home portion of their 2012-13 season with a 71-35 victory over Grand View JV Tuesday night inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

After a rough first 20 minutes of action, the Tritons were able to storm past the Vikings behind the play of freshman Jaleel Gray.

Iowa Central (1-2 overall) outscored Grand View 42-21 over the final 20 minutes, as Gray scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. Jesse Jones contributed 10 points, while Deion Isham had seven points, five rebounds and four steals.

Over the past weekend, the Tritons dropped a pair of games to Marshalltown and Southeastern - two NJCAA Div. I squads - at the Southeastern Classic. Long-time Iowa Central head coach Dennis Pilcher was more pleased with the second half performance than the first from his green team.

"We went to a smaller, quicker lineup to start the second half and that seemed to give Grand View troubles," said Pilcher, who earned his 747 career victory. "We just didn't have a good flow going in the first (half). We were coming off those two tough games vs. (NJCAA) Div. I teams, and I think that might have played into it a little.

"Still, I thought Gray really sparked us, and Jones and Isham gave us some solid contributions."

Iowa Central hit its first five field goals after the intermission, building a 39-18 advantage. That lead ballooned to as many as 29 after a Gray steal and dunk.

The Tritons had 13 steals as a team, but committed just as many turnovers.

"We've got to do a better job of working the offense and finding the open guy," Pilcher said. "I thought we did a good job of that in the second half, but we need to improve."

Another area of concern following the game was free throw shooting, as Iowa Central hit just 15 of 29 attempts from the charity stripe.

"I've never had a team shoot so poorly from the line," Pilcher said. "I think we are a dribble-drive team, and if we are going to do that, we're going to get fouled; we have to convert those shots at the line."

The Tritons return to action this Friday at the Norfolk Invitational in Nebraska. Iowa Central will play Northeast Nebraska and Central-Columbus.
