Aaliyah Jade Warland, 11, daughter of Jennifer Warland and Joseph Warland, of Fort Dodge, was recognized at the University of Iowa on Oct. 7 as an exceptional student in part of an academic research program. Warland was one of 490 students nationwide to be honored in Iowa City.

She scored 95 percent or higher in the Iowa Assessments in 2011 and was eligible for the Belin Exceptional Talent Search (BESTS) program.

Warland is a sixth-grade student at Fair Oaks Middle School. She selected her first-grade teacher, Laurel Redmond, as one of her elementary teachers who had made a great influence on her life.

Registering for BESTS made Warland eligible to participate in summer enrichment and pre-college programs at the Belin Blank Center, and take the EXPLORE test in January 2012.
