Ready to put its best foot forward, the St. Edmond volleyball team will host South Hamilton in a Class 2A, Region 4 quarterfinal this evening.
Start time is set for 7 p.m.
Despite falling to North Central Conference foe Clarion-Goldfield in their regular-season finale, the Gaels (10-16) enter tonight's match with two victories in their last three outings.
"We're fairly confident we can go out and perform pretty well," SEHS head coach John Johnson said. "We've been practicing a lot better the last two and a half to three weeks. We're still up and down a little, but not nearly as much as we were at the beginning of the season."
Senior Hannah Lentsch (153 kills and 68 blocks), junior Alli Huss (133 kills, 102 digs and 51 blocks), senior Molly Doster (365 assists, 143-for-150 serving and 66 digs), senior Skylar Berdaus (162 digs and 116 kills) and senior Claire Crimmins (184 digs, 147 of 157 serving and 113 kills) are the catalysts in the St. Edmond lineup.
Anchoring the Hawks (8-16) are Tiffany Jacobson (111 blocks and 81 kills), Eliana Lowry (90 kills and 61 blocks), Sarah Rudy (67 kills and 171-for-195 serving) and MacKenzie Busch (123 assists and 132 of 140 serving). Jacobson is tied for seventh in 2A in total blocks. South Hamilton, which placed seventh in the Heart of Iowa Conference at 3-7, wrapped up its regular season with a sweep of CMB-Baxter.
"South Hamilton has gone to some good tournaments, and has a new coach (Cindy Holmes) this year, who has done a solid job with them," Johnson said. "(The Hawks) are a little like us in that they're just starting to learn a legit offense, which tends to lead to some growing pains."
The St. Edmond/South Hamilton winner advances to face either No. 8 Woodward-Granger (28-3) or Madrid (8-13) in a 2A regional semifinal Friday at 7 p.m. in Woodward.
