Students who will go to the middle school being built in Fort Dodge may arrive there via Dodger Drive.
That's the name proposed for the new street just south of the school, and the City Council seems likely to approve it next month.
''We believe that the appropriate name would be Dodger Drive,'' Stuart Cochrane, the president of the Fort Dodge Community School District Board of Education, told the council Monday evening.
He said the name was selected with student input.
The school district's sports teams are known as Dodgers and Cochrane said giving that name to the street would ''add a sense of pride in the community.''
Councilman Andy Fritz recommended accepting the school district's proposal, and all of his council colleagues agreed. They directed City Manager David Fierke to prepare a measure that would legally name the street and place it on the Nov. 5 council agenda.
Council members did vote unanimously to accept the road as a public right-of-way.
The new street extends from the intersection of Sixth Avenue North and 29th Street in the west to 32nd Street in the east. The school district paid for its construction.
The new middle school will open for the 2013-2014 academic year.
