ALGONA -The 64th Annual Algona Band Day Festival is Saturday. The parade, featuring 23 Iowa middle school, high school and college bands and 130 additional parade units, will start at 1 p.m.

The parade route runs from Central Park to the Kossuth County Courthouse on State Street. The bands will have their performances evaluated and ranked by a team of professional marching band adjudicators. The rankings of the band performances will be announced following the parade at the reviewing stand at approximately 3:30 p.m.

The Algona Band Day Festival continues at the Algona High School Bulldog Stadium with a field show, featuring 13 Iowa high school bands. The show will start at 6 p.m. and conclude at 10 p.m. More than 850 high school musicians will be performing that evening. Five adjudicators will evaluate the bands and critique the performances. The performances are then scored and ranked against each other. Each band will receive a recorded critique from each adjudicator and a video of their show to assist them as they work to improve their level for future performances.

In addition to awards for placing by class, plaques are presented for the best drumline, colorguard, wind section, drum major and marching technique. The John Aboud Sweepstakes Award, sponsored by the Algona Community School District Vocal and Instrumental Promoters, is awarded to the band with the highest points, using the formula of 100 percent of field score plus 20 percentof the parade score. This award is a traveling trophy. 2012 marks the 32nd year for the field show component of the festival.
