Sandy Mickelson, columnist and former Messenger lifestyle editor, received four National Federation of Press Women communications contest awards Saturday in Scottsdale, Ariz.
She earned a second-place award in the photographer-writer category for her story on Linda and Michael Nepereny, of Stratford, and their Norwegian fjord horses.
A photo essay on finding beauty in everyday objects took third place in its category.
Reporting on social issues, including the Beacon of Hope homeless men's shelter, and news coverage of the Pocahontas County tornadoes and ice jams in the Des Moines River, received honorable mention.
Mickelson retired from The Messenger in October 2011. She continues to write her When We're Together column for Sunday's Lifestyle.
