If the second-ranked (Class 2A) Western Christian volleyball team is to secure another Jackie Wilde Invitational title today, they will have to upset the No. 1 rated team in Class 5A, Iowa City High.
Fort Dodge will host the eight-team field beginning inside the Dodger gym at 9 a.m.
The Wolfpack, who lost in the state finals a year ago after winning gold in 2010, topped City High last season. The Little Hawks reached the 4A finals a year ago, falling to rival Iowa City West.
Seventh-ranked (5A) Dowling, No. 10 (5A) Ames, third-rated (3A) Nevada, No. 14 (4A) Council Bluffs Lewis Central and Osage round out the field.
"This is one tough tournament," said FDSH head coach Toni Cochrane. "It's a fun one to host, especially with this level of talent on competing under one roof."
Fort Dodge (6-10 overall) is set to face Ames, City High, Osage, Dowling, Lewis Central and Nevada on the day.
The Dodgers went 2-4 a year ago, defeating Osage and Nevada. Fort Dodge topped Des Moines North earlier this week.
Juniors Ashley Altman, Tiana Mericle and Lexi Astor lead FDSH in kills, while ninth-grader Jaci Cochrane has also started her high school career off on the right note.
Maddie Egli paces Fort Dodge in assists, while Mericle, Altman and Mariah Welter lead the way in blocks.
"I'm excited to see what we can do on the court," Cochrane said. "We know we will be matched up with some very talented teams, but I feel like this will be a great way to test our skills."
This afternoon's championship team will be determined by the following criteria: 1. Match record; 2. Head-to-head competition; 3. Least games lost; 4. Least defensive points scored.
All teams will play six matches, and all matches will be best 2 of 3 series to 21 points.
Wilde was a head coach for the Dodgers from 1970-91, leading them to 18 consecutive state tournament appearances - and 19 overall. She captured state titles in 1971 and '84, going 519-204-31 in her career.
Fort Dodge finished in the top-four 10 times under Wilde.
