Arm strength

Gimbel, Bobcats drub Dodgers

September 8, 2012

Blake Gimbel left an indelible mark on the Dodger Stadium history books here Friday.

Marshalltown's senior quarterback set a handful of records inside the 73-year-old facility against Fort Dodge last night, as the Bobcats used their relentless air strike to zip past the Dodgers, 52-15.

Gimbel, the state's overall passing leader by a wide margin, established new venue benchmarks for completions (33), attempts (52) and yards (414) in a single game. All four of the 6-foot-4 right-hander's touchdown passes were to classmate Tad Steffensen - Iowa's top prep receiver.

''They were as good as advertised,'' FDSH head coach Matt Miller said. ''Gimbel came in with over 1,100 yards in just three games against teams like Ankeny and Waukee, and Steffensen is averaging more than 10 catches (per contest). Well, they certainly didn't do anything to hurt those averages against us.

''We are where we are and we can only move forward. It's not an excuse, but I honestly think we've seen three of the four best teams on our schedule in these first three weeks. We have to use the pain from these losses as motivation to prevent it from happening next Friday (at Mason City).''

The Dodger setback followed a familiar pattern. Despite surrendering 297 passing yards to Gimbel and 20 first downs to the Bobcats (2-2 overall) in the first half, Fort Dodge's defense had allowed just 17 total points. Steffensen returned a kickoff 87 yards for the third Marshalltown touchdown.

RECEIVING-Marshalltown: Tad Steffensen 11-197, De'Quan McDowell 9-81, Brandon Pettigrew 7-64, Dacoda Ewalt 4-55, Austin Sowers 2-17. Fort Dodge: Tyler Vaughn 5-112, Wesley Castro 3-49, Tommy Halligan 2-30, Keegan Jones 1-15, Riley Prescott 1-13, Zach Anderson 1-12.

Things got out of hand again in the third quarter, though, as the Dodgers gave up 21 unanswered points for the third consecutive week.

''We turned the ball over a few times and had some drives stall out in their territory,'' Miller said. ''I thought our intensity and focus was much better out of the gate, and I didn't go into halftime feeling like we were out of it by any means.

''We just have to get these third quarter issues fixed. We fumbled the ball on the first play and they score on fourth down. It definitely rips away any chance we have for momentum when we are struggling so much (after the break).''

Junior quarterback Andrew Stover threw for 219 yards and a pair of scores for Fort Dodge, but the Dodger ground game was a non-factor and four of their drives stalled without points in Bobcat territory.

''Obviously Gimbel and his receivers did their thing, but I thought the story of the night was Marshalltown's front four, and specifically, (6-foot-3, 305-pound defensive tackle Pedro) Gomez,'' Miller said. ''Their defense was solid. They hit hard and we're pretty banged up because of it.''

Seniors Wesley Castro and Anthony Credit, junior Devon Kirby and sophomore Austin Halligan all left with injuries.

FDSH senior Tyler Vaughn had five catches for 112 yards, while classmates Keegan Jones and Tommy Halligan hauled in TD tosses from Stover. Senior Austin Anderson recovered a fumble and junior Brandan Schoenfeld picked off an errant Gimbel throw.

Credit, sophomore Skyler Harris and freshman Sam Cook recorded Dodger sacks. Vaughn boomed a 66-yard punt in the first half.

Gimbel attempted 39 passes in the first half alone, completing 23 for the 297 yards.

Fort Dodge (0-3) heads to Mason City this week to take on a Mohawk squad they've beaten eight straight years. Mason City (0-3) lost at Waukee last night, 34-10.

''We're going to get there,'' Miller said. ''Urbandale is ranked, Sioux City East just scored 84 points (Thursday against Sioux City North) and Marshalltown is throwing like this on everyone. I truly believe we have winning football ahead of us, but to get there, we have to work hard, stick together and develop a hatred for losing. That's how we break the pattern.''
