To the editor:
One hundred fourteen individuals and 16 teams competed in the sixth annual Half-Olympic Distance Triathlon on Aug. 4. The 156 registered athletes ranged in age from 15 to 71 and they represented 10 countries, eight states and 39 different towns in Iowa.
For the first time in the history of the Twin Lakes Triathlon, both the male and female winners from the previous year repeated as champions and they also set course records. Taylor Huseman, a 2011 graduate of Manson Northwest Webster High School and now a sophomore at University of South Dakota, won the men's division with a record time of 1:00:56. Holland Smith, a 15-year-old from St. Joseph, Mo., won the women's division with a course record of 1:11:21. Team 'Merica (Erik Anderson, Brady Campbell, Eric Welter) won the team competition.
The Twin Lakes Event Planning Committee would like to express thanks to the 121 volunteers, ages 10 to 94, who helped at the Triathlon - the volunteers are the key to the success of this event. We continue to receive many positive comments from our participants, including local Fort Dodge resident, Heath Briggs, participant and member of Trisports).
Once again Twin Lakes Tri is one of the best races in the state. Thanks to all the workers.
We also want to thank our generous sponsors whose donations provided our participants with dry-release shirts, swim caps, medals, trophies, items for their bags, and door prizes: Brown's Shoe Fit, Pathways Centers, Twin Lakes Marina, Hy-Vee Drugstore, Jensen Builders, Josephson Mfg., Northwest Bank, Gunderson Funeral Home, Shimkat Motors, Aramark, Pocahontas Pharmacy, Gadbury Plumbing, Champion Chrysler, RoJohn Home Improvement, Acree Chiropractic, Fort Dodge Trisport, Kemna Auto, RelaxStation, Calhoun County Public Health, Stewart Memorial Community Hospital, Newell Farms, Decker Truckline, Rasch Construction, Jerry Black family, and Jim & Ann Rodenborn. We also appreciate the support and help of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Calhoun County EMT, Iowa State Patrol, sheriff, the county engineer and The Messenger.
The Triathlon raised more than $6,600 for youth camper scholarships to the Twin Lakes Bible Camp. We will host the seventh annual Twin Lakes Half-Olympic Distance Triathlon on Aug. 3, 2013.
