Man faces multiple charges
A Fort Dodge man has been charged with multiple crimes following several incidents on Monday.
Devin Vanderheiden, 19, crashed his car in the 800 block of Ninth Avenue Southwest early Monday. He is also charged with hitting the front stairs of a house on that block, according to court documents.
While being treated at Trinity Regional Medical Center, Vanderheiden allegedly started swearing at emegency room staff, and had to be restrained. At one point, he allegedly hit a Fort Dodge Police officer in the neck, and broke the wristband on the officer's watch.
Vanderheiden also allegedly had a "green, leafy substance that is consistent with marijuana" in his pocket while he was at the Webster County Jail.
He was charged with furnishing a controlled substance to a detention facility, operating while intoxicated first offense, assault on a police officer, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to maintain control, fifth-degree criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.
At his initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court on Monday, Magistrate William Habhab ordered Vanderheiden released with supervision to the Department of Correctional Services.
Vanderheiden's case was sent to District Court.
Car accident sends 6 to hospital
SAC COUNTY - Nobody was seriously injured in a car accident Saturday that sent six people to the hospital.
At 1:06 p.m., two cars were going east on a gravel road a half mile east of Schaller, according to Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure. A westbound car, driven by Michael Tiefenthaler, 16, of Early, crashed into the second car, which was being driven by Kyra Hoffman, 15, of Schaller. Four passengers in Hoffman's car, as well as Hoffman and Tiefenthaler, were taken to Buena Vista County Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to McClure.
An investigation revealed the accident was caused by dust from the gravel road.
"Persons operating on dry gravel roads should maintain a safe distance when following other vehicles and give the dust time to settle," McClure wrote in a press release.
Hoffman was charged with violation of restricted license.
