IOWA FALLS - Turning in one of their top performances of the season, the St. Edmond softball team escaped with a 4-3 North Central Conference victory over 15th-ranked (Class 3A) Iowa Falls-Alden Tuesday night.
Josie Heesch's RBI double in the sixth inning brought home Allie Oberg with the decisive run for the Gaels (17-8 overall, 11-3 North Central Conference).
With the win, SEHS avenged an earlier setback to the Cadets (20-7, 12-2) and now trail them by just one game for the conference lead.
"We've been playing every night like it's tournament play and win or go home," SEHS head coach Paul Hunt said. "For us to still have a shot at a share of the conference title is pretty exciting. I think (last night) was our biggest win of the season and really sets the tone for how we need to play in the postseason."
Oberg and Brigid Hanley each went 2-for-3 for the Gaels, while Lexi Peed delivered her second homer of the season in the fifth.
Katie Donnelly (14-5) went the distance in the circle for SEHS, surrendering five hits with six strikeouts.
