Algona girls take NCC crown

CLARION - The Algona girls track team ran away from the rest of the North Central Conference here Monday night, capturing the team title with 159 points.

Bishop Garrigan was a distant second with 91, followed by Eagle Grove, Clarion-Goldfield, Humboldt, Webster City, Hampton-Dumont, Iowa Falls-Alden, St. Edmond and Clear Lake.

The Bulldogs claimed six event titles, including individual wins from Paige Yi in the 400 and Tangy Wiseman in the 3000.

Algona also captured the 4x100, 4x200, sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relay titles.

Alanna Hill and Tiffany Christensen were each double winners for the Eagles, with Hill claiming the 100 and 200, while Christensen captured the 800 and 1500. Lexie Miller added the 100-meter hurdles title to the night of honors for Eagle Grove.

Addison Miller from Garrigan finished first in the 400 hurdles, while the Golden Bears also claimed the 4x400 relay.

St. Edmond's distance medley of Libby Augustine, Hannah Lentsch, Maddie McCarville and Mary Eide dropped almost six seconds off their seed time in placing first. The 4x100, 4x200 and sprint medley for the Gaels all claimed third, while Eide was also earned bronze in the 1500.

"It was kind of a rough night, but we did the best we could," SEHS head coach Donn Larson said. "I was impressed with our distance medley, as that should give us a strong time for districts.

"It was a tough meet, but the girls ran hard."

Humboldt's Erica Lane won the discus, while Clarion-Goldfield's 4x800 relay also earned first.

Teams will take to the track on Thursday for district meets around the state. The Gaels will be running at Ida Grove.
