LAKE CITY - Reader's Digest has given first place to Lake City in its We Hear You America contest, an honor that is accompanied by a $50,000 prize.

The Calhoun County town - population 1,558, according to Reader's Digest - plans to use the prize for a $2 million community swimming pool project.

"I was fortunate to be raised in Lake City, Iowa," Cindy Paintner wrote during the campaign. "Small town kids need to be able to stay in their communities and experience the fun of summer by riding their bikes to a facility that is updated - but also safe."

Lake City earned more than 4.7 million of the more than 30 million total votes cast in the contest.

Second place went to Higginsville, Mo.

In January, community residents gathered at the local library with their laptop computers in a push they called "Rock the Vote."

The goal was to beat Higginsville.
