Too often athletic contests are marred by boorish, sometimes dangerous behavior by spectators. When a school's students are involved, it needs to do more than tell them they have been bad boys and girls.
More than a month ago during a basketball game between Xavier University and its crosstown rival Cincinnati University, a brawl broke out. Xavier officials believe a hostile atmosphere created by student spectators added to the trouble.
So Xavier is requiring students to attend "reflection sessions" aimed at convincing them to behave themselves.
But students who don't go to the sessions will be barred from receiving home game tickets for the rest of the season.
Good for Xavier.
It is a campaign others, both high schools and in higher education, should emulate. And if "reflection sessions" fail to shape up the student section, troublemakers should be expelled.
