IOWA FALLS - For the St. Edmond wrestling team, there's no time like the present to showcase its talent on the mat.
Joining the Gaels in today's North Central Conference meet are Algona, No. 2 (Class 1A) Clarion-Goldfield, Eagle Grove, Humboldt, defending NCC champion Webster City, Clear Lake, Hampton-Dumont and host Iowa Falls-Alden.
Competition for the 45th annual event begins at 10 a.m.
"I'm expecting another tough meet that'll probably all come down to wrestlebacks like usual," SEHS head coach Jim Allison said. "I see Clarion and Webster City battling right until the end. Not to take anything away from anyone else, but those two teams are both really good. Clarion might have a chance to put six or seven kids in the finals, which will make it extremely difficult for anyone to beat them. At the same time, things could get pretty interesting when you start breaking down the finals."

After winning the Coon Rapids-Bayard Duals Tournament with a perfect 4-0 mark in their previous outing, the Gaels appear to be hitting their stride when it matters most. Junior Colten Lastine (113), senior Patrick Lindner (182), fifth-ranked (1A) sophomore Vinnie Harvey (195) and No. 3 senior Ryan Rodenborn (220) all went unbeaten for St. Edmond last Saturday.
"Our guys have been working hard and had a pretty good week of practice," said Allison. "We just need to find a way to wrestle with more consistency, because we've been kind of up and down like a roller coaster lately."
Lastine (22-6 overall), 126-pound senior Patrick Oberg (20-9), 152-pound senior Joe Winge (22-8), Lindner (22-6), Vinnie Harvey (25-3) and Rodenborn (22-2) have all collected at least 20 wins on the season for the Gaels. Despite battling through nagging injuries, No. 5 106-pound sophomore Kaden McClintock (18-1) and ninth-ranked 145-pound junior Teddie Harvey (16-1) have also made a significant impact for SEHS. Teddie Harvey will return to the Gael lineup today after being sidelined for the last four outings with a concussion.
"Our goal as a team (today) is obviously to win as many matches and possible, but you never know how things might play out at a meet like (the NCC)," Allison said. "I personally feel we have a chance of getting at least three guys into the finals. We need to come out with the right attitude and focus and good things should happen."
Other ranked Messenger-area athletes set to participate in today's tournament include No. 3 senior Aaron Anderson (120), fifth-ranked senior Marcus Peterson (132), No. 6 senior Sam Solis (138), seventh-ranked senior Maxx Schultz (152), No. 4 junior Jake Haberman (160), fourth-ranked senior Knute Severson (195) and No. 2 sophomore Mitch Gambrill (220) all of Clarion-Goldfield, Webster City's No. 9 (2A) senior Royce Nessa (145), 10th-ranked sophomore Connor Larson (160) and No. 5 senior Luke Shannon (170), along with Humboldt's top-ranked (2A) senior Brance Simms (126).
Clear Lake, which has won five of the past six NCC meets, will also be represented by No. 2 (2A) senior Logan Kellogg (182).
McClintock, Anderson and Larson are each seeking their second consecutive NCC individual crowns.
Eagle Grove owns the most league championships (10) and individual titles (95). Humboldt has finished with at least one individual NCC gold medalist for the past 24 years.
