Bob Brown, who served as the Messenger's iconic sports editor for nearly four decades, died on Tuesday.
He was 83 years old.
Brown passed away at Tompkins Health Center at approximately 9 p.m. last night.
Brown spent 37 years behind the desk as The Messenger's chief sports editor. He took the job on April 16, 1956, and retired June 1, 1993. Brown continued his "Inside on the Outside" and "Crowd Noise" columns periodically through last year.
A Fort Dodge High School and Drake University graduate, Brown is in both the FDSH and University of Iowa Hall of Fame for his writing exploits. He was named the Associated Press Iowa Sportswriter of the Year three times - in 1964, 1974 and 1975.
Brown attended Duncombe Elementary School, Junior High (which is now Fair Oaks Middle School) and FDSH, graduating in 1946.
Brown is survived by his wife, Nan; sons, Roger, Rick and Randy; and daughter, Renee.
