EMMETSBURG - No. 1 Emmetsburg opened its postseason with a bang, thumping Prairie Valley by a 47-0 final in Class 1A playoff action on Wednesday.
The unbeaten and defending state quarterfinalist E-Hawks (10-0 overall) racked up 402 yards of total offense - with 331 coming on the ground.
Andrew Wellik, a 200-pound junior, sparked the vaunted Emmetsburg rushing attack with 87 yards on just three carries, including a 61-yard scamper to paydirt.
Brady Christensen ran seven times for 75 yards and a score as well for the E-Hawks, while Marcus Akridge added 63 yards and a touchdown on five attempts.
Quarterback Ryan Kleigl also connected with Jake Carlson on endzone strikes of 30 and 41 yards.
Brady Berkland (5.5 tackles) and Kliegl (interception and fumble recovery) anchored the stingy E-Hawk defensive unit, which held the Warriors (5-5) to just 99 yards of offense.
Mason Gordon (10 totes for 41 yards), Jordan Samuelson (two catches for 34 yards) and Blake Kromrie (seven stops) each provided bright spots for Prairie Valley.
Emmetsburg now advances to face Manson Northwest Webster in a 1A second-round matchup on Monday. The Cougars rolled to a 55-34 victory last night over Sioux Central.
