Moving a household or a business can be both costly and stressful.
Paul Brandow and his wife, Dawn Brandow, are working hard to provide moving services that are both attractively priced and as hassle-free as possible.
In January, the Brandows launched Fort Dodge-based A-1 Moving. The new company specializes in household furniture moving. It offers a full line of relocation services that also includes office moving, packing, crating, piano moving, and loading and unloading of rental trucks.

A-1 Moving owners Paul and Dawn Brandow opened their Fort Dodge-based business in January. The company specializes in household furniture moving.
Paul Brandow, a 1993 graduate of Fort Dodge Senior High, got into the moving business at age 19.
"I worked for several of the other moving companies in the area," he said. "Also delivered furniture for some of the furniture stores."
Now he is drawing on those years of experience to make A-1 Moving a success. He said he loves this type of work.
"I spend a lot of time in the weight room and working out and doing that kind of stuff and have for years. So I'm in shape for it physically," Brandow said. "I enjoy the work. I really do. Some people think that you'd have to be sick in the head to enjoy moving heavy stuff, but I really do enjoy the work."
Brandow said his company's low overhead makes it possible for him to offer highly affordable, very competitive prices. He said, however, that early in his career he learned the importance of attention to detail and has made that a defining feature of the service A-1 Moving offers.
"Attention to detail and price," he said are A-1's prime selling points. "We can save somebody money over what a lot of the other companies can."
Brandow stressed that his personal involvement in each move is a critical feature of the A-1 Moving game plan.
"Owning a small business ... I'm representing my own personal name. It's not a big conglomeration or whatever where I'm working for somebody who's working for somebody, who's working for somebody and you can kind of pass the buck," he said. "I have to be personally responsible for what goes on."
The importance of being personally accountable for the quality of the job was a key to success that Brandow said he learned years ago.
"Even as a 19-year-old kid, when I started, the guys that I worked for, they really took pride in the work that they did. They passed that on to me," he said. "That's the difference in owning your own business from working for somebody."
The economic downturn may have deterred some would-be entrepreneurs from starting a business. Brandow said, however, it has actually proved a good time to launch his enterprise.
"We're in a perfect place," he said. "We're able to offer a needed service at maybe a little more affordable rate than the going average. In an economic downturn, people are looking for a deal."
Brandow said he has twin goals of wanting to have a successful business while at the same time offering services that benefit the community.
"Moving is a stressful time for the person who is moving," he said. "We're in the business, obviously, to make a living, but we want to be a help to those who need assistance."
Brandow said doing those extra things that help make a customer comfortable with a move are a priority for him.
When a move goes well, he said it is a very satisfying to receive positive feedback from customers who are pleased with the high-quality service the team at A-1 provides.
