Rep. Tom Latham invites all Iowa students interested in the opportunities offered by the five U.S. military service academies to his annual Fourth Congressional District Military Academy Day on April 30.
Latham's Military Academy Day will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. April 30 at the Career Education Building on the campus of Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. Representatives from the various service academies will be on hand beginning at 8:30 a.m. to provide information and answer questions, and the program will begin at 9 a.m. A midshipman in the U.S. Naval Academy and a cadet in the U.S. Air Force Academy are scheduled to attend to answer questions and lead a discussion on life at the academies.
A prospective student must receive a nomination from a member of Congress to gain entrance to the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Entrance into the U.S. Coast Guard Academy is determined by an annual nationwide competition.
Students who wish to attend a service academy as a freshman in 2012 must turn in their application to Latham's office in Fort Dodge no later than Oct. 1. Applications are available in Latham's Fort Dodge office or online at www.latham.house.gov/ConstituentServices/serviceacademynominations.htm.
