CALLENDER - Norva Ann Brueland 79, of Moorhead, MN, formerly of Callender, passed away at home August 20, 2010 with her family at her side. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Moorhead, MN. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Wright Funeral Home in Moorhead. There will also be Funeral Services 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Callender, with Pastor Kent Wallace officiating. Burial will be at Callender Cemetery. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. Saturday at the Church until service time. Palmer Funeral Home, Gowrie is in charge of local arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials to the NorvaBrueland scholarship fund that is being created for students working in Concordia's Facilities Management department.
Norva Ann Hanson was born at home on October 31, 1930 in Callender, Iowa to Peter John and Mary Christine (Peterson) Hanson. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Callender. She attended all 12 years of school at Callender, graduating in 1948 as class valedictorian and class president. She participated in school activities including band, choir, and as a girls basketball team member all four years of high school, playing in the state basketball tournament two years. Her church activities included participation in Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, teaching, choir and youth programs. Other activities included being a 4-H member. After high school, Norva attended Waldorf College, Forest City, and The Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis. She worked for the Evangelical Lutheran Church's headquarters, Minneapolis, in the Luther League office, Stewardship office and the Office of the General Secretary. On Aug. 20, 1955, she married Clyde Eugene Brueland in Callender. He was a Luther Seminary student for the next two years, followed by a one year internship at First Lutheran Church, Williston, ND where Norva was employed as the church parish worker. Parishes served after completing seminary were at Huxley and Cambridge, IA; Minot, ND; and Hoyt Lakes, MN. In each place she participated in youth work, church school, women's groups and choir. In 1978, they moved to Moorhead and Norva went to work at Concordia College. She was the office manager in the Physical Plant (Facilities Management) Department for 28 years before retiring in July 2006. The students at Concordia were very important to her and she supported their music and theater activities, sports events, especially basketball, chapel and cultural events. In 1999, she was honored with the Flatt Distinguished Service Award for Support Staff for her services to the College. She liked being "mom" and "grandma" to the students. Norva was also an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins.
Norva was preceded in death were her parents, brother Eldon Hanson, nephew Tom Davis, and granddaughter Nicole Liscum. Survivors are her children: Gregory (Leslie)Brueland of San Antonio, TX, Joel (Shell)Brueland of Great Falls, MT, Brent (Rita)Brueland of Boone, and MarenPechacek of Fargo, ND; 18 grandchildren, 4great-grandchildren, sisters Edna Veenstra of Des Moines, Pearl O'Dell of Bettendorf, Goldie Davis of Fort Dodge; brother Garland (Betty) Hanson of Callender; sisters-in-law, Rosie (Wes) Seaver of Ft. Dodge, and Verna Joyce Klatt of Verndale, MN.
