The experience level for the Manson Northwest Webster wrestling team took a steep decline from last season to this one. The production has not.
Manson Northwest Webster was crowned Class 1A sectional champion with 13 wrestlers placing in the top four to help the Cougars win by nearly twenty points over West Marshall. Six of those wrestlers placed in the top two to advance to districts.
For Manson Northwest Webster head coach Stacey Rice, keeping up with the same lofty production as last year's team came with a little bit of a surprise as the Cougars lost 10 wrestlers from last year's varsity lineup. The Cougars had to replace eight seniors from last year's team as well as Skyler Rice, who transferred to Emmetsburg after accumulating 100 wins in two seasons.
"It was a very good tournament for us, and that comes with a little bit of a surprise after losing ten wrestlers from last year," said Rice. "This team has grown all season and gotteb better every time they wrestle.
"This is where we hoped to be, and now, it has become a reality."
Manson Northwest Webster repeated as sectional champs with two individual gold medalists in eight-rated Jesse Partlow (119) and Jared Gross (285).
Partlow (33-4) defeated St. Edmond's Patrick Oberg and West Marshall's Daltan VanZwol in the first two rounds. In the title match, Partlow prevailed by major decision over Layth Peed of Prairie Valley by a 12-4 margin.
Gross (25-16) wasted no time putting South Hamilton's Jedd Ahlberg to the mat in the first round of the title match, winning by fall in 40 seconds.
Caleb Alne (112), Caleb Smothers (130), Austin Rasch (171) and Ronnie Allbee (189) advanced to districts for the Cougars with runner-up finishes. Dylan Dorage (125), Jordan Howell (140) and Dustin Anderson (160) placed third.
"They've developed all season, and now six have earned the right to try and keep going," said Rice. "We will see if they can take it one step further to Wells Fargo like they have been dreaming of."
St. Edmond
Motivation for St. Edmond's fourth-ranked Lance Maguire (103) and No. 7 Mason Waddell (140) hasn't been hard to come by, as the duo is looking to make it to state for the second time in their respective careers.
Maguire (37-0) and Waddell (36-5) moved one step closer to that goal by bringing home individual sectional crowns for the Gaels on Saturday. St. Edmond placed third with 140 points and five wrestlers are headed districts, including Joe Winge (152), David Lindner (160) and Ben Kraayenrbink (215).
"I thought getting six through was possible and we got five. That's still a number that I'm pleased with because of how hard they wrestled," said SEHS head coach Jim Allison. "If you watched us from last week to this week, there was a drastic turnaround. They were much hungrier this time out."
Maguire opened with a bye, then pinned Dominique Chitty in the first period to reach the championship round. Maguire earned a 4-0 decision over West Marshall's Dustin Gould to claim first.
Waddell also earned a bye in the first round, then advanced to the finals match with a victory against Ethan Ackerman. Waddell defeated West Marshall's Justin Toyne by an 8-5 score to earn the gold.
Winge - a sophomore - upset Ogden's Stephon Ahrens to earn runner-up honors. Ahrens wrestled in the title match but was knocked off, sending him to wrestleback against Winge. Winge then pinned Ahrens in the first period.
Gael 160-pounder David Lindner also placed second after falling just short in the title match against top-seeded Justin Head 11-8. Lindner didn't have to wrestleback after already beating Dustin Anderson in the semis.
Kraayenrbink knocked off top-seeded Kody Sjoblom in the semis, but fell to Zack Cartensen in the title match. Kraayenbrink didn't have to wrestleback either.
"We'are going to try and fine-tune our technique and do a little conditioning to make sure we are ready to go by (Saturday)," said Allison. "They understand that this is a big opportunity ahead.''
Prairie Valley
Prairie Valley's front-runners did what they were expected to do.
Top-seeded Brayton Taylor (130) and Jon Elmore (152) gave the Warriors individual sectional championships, as the Warriors placed sixth with 128.5 points.
Third-rated Taylor (36-0) won via fall in his first two matches, advancing to face Manson Northwest Webster's Caleb Smothers in the title round. Taylor won by technical fall in the first period, 17-2.
Elmore (30-5) claimed his crown in similar fashion with a technical fall victory against Ogden's Stephon Ahrens. Elmore won, 17-2.
"Both of these guys were seeded first, so we were counting on them to advance and that's what they did," said PVHS head coach Jeff Miller. "They're taking it one match at a time, but they have tremendous potential at state if they make it there."
Layth Peed also advanced for the Warriors with a runner-up finish at 119 pounds. Peed fell to eighth-rated Jesse Partlow in the title match, but won his wrestleback 14-4 against West Marshall's Daltan VanZwol.
"We thought Peed was worthy of being seeded second, but he won his wrestleback to prove it himself," said Miller. "I think he is realizing that this is his last chance (as a senior), and he doesn't want to leave without making it to state."
Southeast Webster-Grand
Zack Carstensen was the only wrestler to advance to districts for Southeast Webster-Grand, claiming first place at 215 pounds for the Eagles.
Carstensen (24-10) made it the semifinals after a bye in the first round, then knocked off Manson Northwest Webster's Daniel Goodwin to advance.
Carstensen defeated Ben Kraayenrbink by a 10-4 margin in the title round to place first.
