The Fort Dodge girls basketball team didn't let their contest against Des Moines Hoover become a trap game and now can focus all of their attention for an important upcoming conference match up against Mason City.

The Dodgers (7-9 overall) rolled past Hoover (2-16) 65-46 inside Dodger Gym as Fort Dodge held a double-digit lead for the entire second half in their second-highest scoring performance of the season.

It was a rebound game for Fort Dodge, playing their first game since a tough loss to No. 4 Waukee. The Dodgers were one point shy of doubling up their point total from the Waukee game with 65 points against Hoover.

"We didn't think we played the best against Waukee, and we wanted to get back to playing the way we can," said FDSH head coach Bryan Friedrichs. "This was a good game to show some of the progress we made, and now we have to try and continue that into Friday's game with Mason City."

Both teams stayed even in the first quarter as a press from the Dodgers turned into a double-edged sword. The Dodgers came up with five turnovers in the period, but allowed eight points in transition.

Hoover pulled within six early in the second, but they never got closer to the lead as the Dodgers closed the quarter on an 11-3 run. A putback from Abbie Crouse with four seconds left game the Dodgers a 34-20 advantage.

"We gave up some easy baskets and knew we weren't quite playing to our full ability," said Friedrichs. "The girls came out in the second quarter and really got it going the way we wanted to."

Fort Dodge made five of their first seven field goal attempts to start the third quarter and jumped out on 10-2 run. The Dodgers forced six turnovers and held Hoover to just nine points in the period.

The Dodgers kept the pace up in the fourth quarter with two fast break field goals off Hoover turnovers in the opening minutes. With a sizable lead, the Dodgers rotated out starters for subs through the final three minutes of the game.

"I thought the girls executed pretty well," said Friedrichs. "We played a full game and gave a good effort."

The Dodgers shot over 50 percent from the floor, making 26-of-49 attempts. FDSH also had four starters reach double-figures for the first time all season.

Rachel Evans led all scorers with 19 points. Evans went 9-of-10 from the free throw line and also pulled down three offensive rebounds.

Senior Abby Edwards scored 18 points as well, making nine of nine of her 11 attempted field goals.

Mackenzie Alstott scored 11 points with nine in the first half.

"We will take that type of production every night. We want to have a very high balanced attack, and the girls gave us that," said Friedrichs. "Everybody stepped up and hit shots when they had to.'

The Dodgers get back into CIML Iowa play with a rivalry game against Mason City (12-5, 6-2) on Friday. As well as being senior night, Fort Dodge will honor 'Coaches vs. Cancer' with special pink uniforms. Tip off is set for 6:15 p.m.

"We want to carry momentum into Friday night, because it will be a very important game with it being pink ribbon and senior night," said Friedrichs.
