Thousands feared dead in Haiti

Algona native escapes injury

By EMILIE NELSON Messenger staff writer
POSTED: January 14, 2010

ALGONA -An Algona native escaped injury in a massive earthquake which left much of southern Haiti in ruins Tuesday.

Michael Geilenfeld, founder of the St Joseph's Family, a mission which includes the St. Joseph's Home for Boys, Wings of Hope, a home for disabled children in Port-au-Prince; and Trinity House, a boys home in the community of Jacmel; was uninjured in Tuesday's earthquake. The magnitude-7.0 quake was the most powerful to hit the Caribbean nation in more than a century.

"He is safe," said Geilenfeld's sister-in-law, Barbara Geilenfeld, of Oelwein.

Barbara Geilenfeld is the wife of Michael Geilenfeld's older brother, Chuck Geilenfeld.

Colleen Hegarty, of Algona, a friend of Michael Geilenfeld, said she has been receiving updates from Barbara Geilenfeld's relatives in Algona as they are made available, as communication in Haiti is limited due to the quake.

"When we first heard about the earthquake I thought of Michael and thought 'who can I call to find out,'" said Hegarty. "We know St. Joseph's was heavily damaged. We've heard that the kids are doing OK."

The St. Joseph's Web site reported that the facilities had received "significant structural damage" and that the St. Joseph Home in Port-au-Prince had been "devastated."

"Two of the three homes were completely destroyed," said Barbara Geilenfeld. "Only one person was injured."

The children at the St. Joseph home were unharmed because they were outdoors when the quake occurred, Hegarty said.

"One administrator was injured when he had to jump from a building," Chuck Geilenfeld said. "But he is going to be OK."

Hegarty said she visited the St. Joseph Home shortly after it was founded 25 years ago.

"They were getting ready to have a big 25th anniversary celebration there," she said.

Former Messenger photographer Renee Dietrich, who works at Wings of Hope in Port-au-Prince, reported to Hearts With Haiti, the organization which supports St. Joseph's mission, that all of the children from the St. Joseph Home and Wings of Hope are accounted for and are staying in a new kitchen area near the front of the Wings of Hope facility. Dietrich was also unharmed.

Chuck Geilenfeld said the family has also been receiving updates from Dietrich's mother, Lucy Dietrich, of Cedar Rapids.

"It was a relief to hear that he was all right," said Barbara Geilenfeld. "Their father had just recently died and we were very concerned since Michael is Chuck's only brother."

old news49: What website are you asking about???? Hearts with HAITI, MENTIONED IN THE ARTICLE or one of the websites I mentioned? Relief agencies are being shown all over the news stations, including most I mentioned. All the asteriks were done by the Messenger, deleting the **** . hope this helps. or ****heartswithhaiti add the dot org. If your inquiry is for immediate relief donations then the ones I previously listed are all good. Here's hoping the food, water, and medicines can start getting through very very soon. Access is extremely difficult and a logistical nightmare.

You can also donate through your cell phone. Text YELE to 501501 to donate $5 to Wyclef Jean's Yele Haiti foundation, or HAITI to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross. The charges get added to your cell phone bill.

The Messenger put the asterik sign in. It is dot org.....and after Americares is dot org..not ORF as I mistakenly typed. Messenger, please increase the letter size in this box...it is too small for some to read or reread. I would appreciate it, as Im sure others would also appreciate it.

Excuse the usage of 'small' used twice in one sentence. Typing in the tiny box it is very difficult to reread my post. Asides from the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, here is a very good list for anyone to reference for relief donations. DOCTORSWITHOUTBORDERS****....UNICEF (UNICEFUSA****) CLINTON FOUNDATION....CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES...AMERICARES.ORF.....CARE**** SAVETHECHILDREN**** ( under "latest news" for Haiti press release & a link to donation page or call 1 800-728-3843). All very reputable agencies that can do the most good. Even a $5.00 to $10.00 donation helps. A million donations of $5 or $10 amounts to 5-10 million dollars. Peace and Love...help is on the way!!

A tragedy in Haiti! The unfolding of the devastation in this small impoverished small nation increases as each day passes. The people in Haiti are in dire need of our help as individuals who care about their fellow human beings. Every donation, no matter how small is urgently needed. What is being witnessed is so deeply heartwrenching. We all need to help, in any way possible! It is great to see the immediate response of the U.S., the international community and all of the relief agencies springing into action for the Haitian people. Let's all give to this effort! Let's unhesitatingly come to the aid of our suffering brothers and sisters in Haiti. Consider how fortunate we are and reach out to lend a helping hand to those in immediate and dire need of help. Together we can make a positive contribution to the suffering and show our love!
