ALVIN R. FISHER

Alvin R. Fisher, 88, of Fort Dodge, died Saturday, December 19, 2009 at his home with his family at his side.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 23rd in the Chapel of Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home with Rev. Allen Henderson, Pastor of St Paul Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post 1856. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife Bernadine; sons, Ronald and his wife Gale of Fort Dodge, Mike and his wife Cindy of Sacramento, CA; daughters, Leanne Halligan and her husband Don of Lehigh, Carol Laufersweiler and her husband Joe of Fort Dodge; grandchildren, Mike (Sadie), Matt (Heather) and Mitch Halligan, Todd (Wendy) Fisher and Kari Fisher, Sarah Laufersweiler; ; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Carley and Abby Halligan, Kaci and Kaden Halligan, Alex Halligan; Nolan Fisher; step-grandchildren Josh and Miranda Ortiz; step-great-grandchildren Caleb and Scott Goodhue; sister, Mary Jane Grove of Webster City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Alvin Fisher and Ethel Marie (Davis) Fisher; step-sister, Helen Anderson; sisters, Betty Lou Biggs, Barbara Combs, Margie McConnell; brothers, Richard, Harold and Donald.

Alvin Ralph Fisher was born November 14, 1921 in Stanhope, Iowa and as a young child moved with his family to Webster City where he attended school. He enlisted in the Army on December 16, 1940 entering the Company E 133rd Infantry Division 2nd Battalion. He trained at Camp Claiborne, LA then transferred to Fort Dix, NJ and later transferred to Belfast, Ireland where he joined forces in Algiers, North Africa for extended training. During WWII, his division joined the famed 34th, known as the Red Bull Division. He served with the Italian Campaign at Anzio Beach Head, Italy, and was captured in October 1944. He was imprisoned at Stalag 7A for 6 months by the Germans and was liberated in April 1945.

After his honorable discharge, he went to work for Wilheim Engineering in Webster City for a short time, and then became employed with Gus Glaser Meats. For almost 25 years, he worked there in sales, and at the time of the plant closing he was the Divisional Sales Manager. Soon afterward, he joined Chuck Wright in the used car business operating Chuck and Al's Used Cars until his retirement in 1984.

He married Bernadine Donner on November 29, 1947 in Des Moines and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1856. Throughout his life, he took particular enjoyment in gardening and he was always willing to share his harvest with his family, neighbors, and friends. He loved to go fishing, and enjoyed his annual trips with his family to the Minnesota Lakes. In retirement, Al loved spending time outside, tending to his yard, and experimenting with curing and smoking different varieties of meats.
