George W. Point, 86, of Fort Dodge, died on Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at the Fort Dodge Villa Care Center.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 19th, at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of the Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. Shane Deman officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the V.F.W. Post 1856. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Today at the funeral home, where there will be a vigil at 7 p.m.
Survivors include- his children, Karleen (Rich) Lawson, Patricia (Dennis) Menke, Barbara (Michael) Mericle, all of Fort Dodge; Edward (Sandra) Point of Denison, and John (Rhonda) Point of Fort Dodge; 12 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren; and his sister, Leota Schuffer of Kansas City, Lois Swearing of Springdale, AR, and Florence Stejskal of Grandmeadow, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents William D. and Bertha Opal Morrison Point; his wife Evelyn; brothers, Wilbur, Marvin, Milton, Eugene, Elden, and Earl; sisters, Vivan, Gayle, Helen Pearl, Ramona Altavieve, Jane Elizabeth, and Ruth Darlene.
George W. Point was born on July 28, 1923, in Rolfe, IA. He attended schools in Pocahontas. As a young man he worked with a neighbor as a hired man. On February 11, 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Philippines as a crane operator. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Pocahontas. On November 28, 1946, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Catherine Wolf at the St. Peter and Paul's Church in Pocahontas. The couple made their home there and he farmed from 1946 until 1953. George also worked in road work and heavy construction from 1954 until 1959. The couple moved to Fort Dodge in November of 1959, where he was employed for Gibbs Cook (now known as Zeigler Cat) until his retirement in March of 1986.
George was a member of the V.F.W. Post 1856.
