VERNON L. POWELL

Vernon L. Powell, 70, of Lohrville, and formerly of Fort Dodge, died Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 10th in the chapel of Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home with Rev. Allen Henderson, Pastor of St Paul Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Surviving is his special companion, Janet Main of Rockwell City; sons, Mark of Fort Dodge, Dan of Lohrville, Vern and his wife Sue of Fort Dodge; daughters, Linda Scott of Fort Dodge, Cindy Thompson of Belmond, Tina Wuebker and her husband Mike of Lohrville; 29 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Harold and his wife Patty of Atlantic; sisters, Marlene Kramer and her husband Kenneth of Alta, Judy Dutcher of Fort Dodge, Sue Konvalinka and her husband Dean of Fort Dodge. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lerenzle and Margaret (Welsh) Powell; brother-in-law, Gary Dutcher; and a niece, Kelly Martens.

Vernon L. Powell was born August 7, 1939 in Stratford, Iowa. He began his education in Webster City before his family moved to Fort Dodge where he graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School. Following his education he became employed at Gibbs-Cook (later known as Zieglers). He was united in marriage to Gloria Showers in 1958 and they established their home in Fort Dodge. Vern later worked as a truck driver at Hormel's for over 20 years and then at Fort Dodge Asphalt, before returning to Zieglers where he worked as a mechanic. He retired in 2001.

Vernon was active in several area country western bands including the Devanaires, The Royal Coachman, and Cheyenne.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
