FD City Council buys more property
Buildings purchased to facilitate Fifth Avenue, downtown projectsBy BILL SHEA Messenger staff writer
A downtown building and one along Fifth Avenue South are being purchased by the Fort Dodge City government.
A structure at 2417 Fifth Ave. S. is being bought for $160,000 from the Elizabeth K. Dummermuth Revocable Trust, of Cedar Rapids. It is a one-story building housing Palmer Hair Co. and National Coatings and Supplies. City officials plant to close on the sale next August.
Dennis Plautz, the city's director of business affairs and community growth, told the City Council Monday that officials approached representatives of the trust seeking to buy some right-of-way for the Fifth Avenue South improvement project. He said those representatives offered to sell the whole parcel.
Plautz said the land may be combined with other parcels and eventually be offered to La'James International College, which has a building to the east of the one the city is buying.
Councilman Curt Olson abstained from the otherwise unanimous vote to buy that building. He didn't offer a reason why he abstained.
The council voted unanimously to buy the building at 515-519 First Ave. S. from Nathan and Julie Gibson, of Badger, for $149,000. Double M Signs now occupies that property.
City officials plan to close that deal in January and demolish the building in the spring of 2010.
That demolition would help clear the way for a possible relocation of Second Avenue South and the conversion of First Avenue South to two-way traffic. The city has already bought the two buildings west of Double M Signs and officials plan to demolish them also.
The street realignment is part of a downtown improvement plan.

I think the city should continue their out of control spending, the county should follow suit and the schools should do the same. When they are finished we'll have such unattractive property tax rates......no one will be able to afford to move here!

As keepngoal said...It is the cities responsibility to make improvements to help the flow of commerce...The only thing I've ever seen the City of FD do is speed commerce out of town!

drive the speed limit and it can take fifteen minutes to get 3/4 across town... then drive the speed limit at peak times and it takes 15 minutes to get half way through town. there are many choke points in the town can could be improved to allow better traffic flow.

Oh yea, let's wait until the economy turns around and then do all the improvements.....and then, we'll cry and whine about why it's not done yet. Are you people ever happy?

Well FD seems to be the only city in the US that has deep pockets. Why are most cities putting things on back burner untill the economy improves ?. Where is all this money coming from ? I can see people and businesses wanting to move to FD in droves....no recession here.

There is plenty of traffic in this town... and there are many choke points for traffic in this town making traveling/commuting difficult. It is the cities responsibility to make improvements to help the flow of commerce. This seems like a good fit for what we need the city gov't and its taxes.

So looking from afar and seeing all this property that the city is buying up...makes me ask...WHY? They can't/don't want to bring new business into town so they just going to buy the whole town??? What is the over all plan...what's the big picture? Why re-align 2nd Ave. So.?
