New logo to show off Fort Dodge features

Design will adorn signs and become letterhead for city government

By BILL SHEA Messenger staff writer
POSTED: November 24, 2009

An arc reminiscent of the Oleson Park Bandshell combined with jagged lines symbolizing the hills and waterways of Fort Dodge make up a newly adopted logo for the community.

It will appear on the large signs that welcome travelers to the city. It will become the city government's letterhead and will eventually adorn city vehicles.

The new logo was offered by the Fort Dodge Area Chamber of Commerce Image Committee and approved Monday by the City Council.

The design was perfected by Sara Hill, a committee member and graphic designer whom City Manager David Fierke called an ''amazing talent.''

Amy Bruno, executive director of the Chamber, said the logo resulted from ''countless hours of input.'' She said it embodies all the elements of Fort Dodge.

Bruno added that committee members quickly reached a consensus on what the main elements of the logo should be.

Fierke said the logo will be gradually phased in for city government use. He added that it will not replace the city seal, which features an Indian brave, on official documents. It also will not replace the rarely seen city flag, he added.

The logo was designed at no cost to the city. Fierke said he doesn't foresee any budget impact for the city to adopt it.

Bruno said the Image Committee will pay for putting the logo on the city's welcome signs.

Former City Councilwoman Jane Burleson criticized the the Image Committee for not getting any input for the city's young people.

''We have great artists at the high school and St. Ed's as well,'' she said.

Would have been nice, and a whole lot more personal, to have LOCAL creatives in on design & creation of the Corridor sculpture. Probably could have saved a hundred grand or so on that! DUH

I agree fairplay about the generosity from Ft. Dodge businesses. Very well documented and very well received.

digger07 comment that if this was done at no cost is a step in the right direction had me wondering what he meant. It appears to lean towards an expected gift from residents.

keepngoal...the charitable spirit of the business community in FD is well-documented. The business community donates an amazing total of goods, services, cash and time to public and private organizations of all type. No one ever said it should be a practice or an expectation of government. It is called having a giving heart...and FD business has plenty of that spirit for which they should be most proud.

I am confused by your statement. Should business be in the business of giving things to the city gov't at no cost? Is that what is expected, people working for free for the city?

while I think it is great this good person dedicated and donated their time/talents, the citizens must realize this shouldn't be counted on and most times paying for the talents of others is the cost of doing business, that the should pay for.

Maybe they should commission a study to see why they didn't need to hire someone to do a study.

Great logo! No need to pay for a consultant when you have the best talent in the Midwest actually living in Fort Dodge and willing to help! I'm happy for the City.

wow, I'm surprised the city didn't hire a consultant for this.

Sorry for the cynicism, but if they did this for no cost, then it's a step in the right direction.
