Tritons go for fifth straight
By RYAN O’HERN, Sports WriterAn unprecedented fifth consecutive NJCAA National Championship is the driving force behind the 2009-10 Iowa Central wrestling team.
The drive for five begins tonight when the Tritons host Minnesota West in a 7 p.m. dual meet inside Hodges Fieldhouse.
The Tritons cruised to their fourth straight title last year in Rochester by sending a record six wrestlers to the finals and finished with a record team score of 161.5 points after five Tritons were crowned national champions.
The Tritons (2006-09) joined North Idaho (1985-88) and Lassen (1995-98) as the only three schools in the history of junior college wrestling to win four titles in a row.
Despite losing four national champions off last year's squad, sixth-year head coach Luke Moffitt is sticking to the same theme when it comes to season goals of winning a record-breaking fifth straight title.
"Our goals are pretty simple. We want to win a national title and put our guys in position to win individually," Moffitt said. "Goals are a big thing for us. We want to put our guys in position to win at the end of the year and then the team thing will happen. We want to make sure they are prepared to win at the end of the year.
"We train these guys all year getting them to believe they are going to win at nationals. You get it into their heads that they are going to win because they are more prepared and more ready than their opponent."
This year's NJCAA meet will be hosted by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference at a historic wrestling venue Veterans' Memorial Auditorium on February 26th and 27th.
Before winning a Big 10 championship at the University of Iowa in 2002 under current Oregon State head coach Jim Zalesky, and prior to winning a national championship for the Tritons in 2000, Moffitt won the 125-pound state title for Estherville at Vets' in 1997.
"It's a historic building and we want to pull off a historic milestone winning five titles in a row," said Moffitt. "It is huge to have nationals in Iowa. Vets is better than any other place. There is a lot of great wrestling that has taken place there.
"We want to be ready to defend our title in the last week of February and make history there."
