Patterson, Fritz elected at large

Will serve four year terms on FD council

By BILL SHEA Messenger staff writer
POSTED: November 4, 2009

Robert ''Barney'' Patterson and Andy Fritz will be the two new at-large members of the Fort Dodge City Council in January.

Patterson led the four-man field with 2,785 votes or 33.54 percent.

Fritz was next with 2,541 votes or 30.60 percent.

Dennis O'Farrell, who has served as a councilman and Webster County supervisor in the past, won 1,690 votes or 20.35 percent.

Eugene Newsome rounded out the field with 1,258 votes or 15.15 percent.

''I couldn't be happier,'' Patterson said.

In winning a council seat, he's following the path of his father, the late Will Patterson, who was both a mayor and councilman.

''I guess come January we'll get down to business,'' he said.

Throughout the campaign, Patterson said he was interested in carrying out the will of the people instead of some agenda of his own. he repeated that pledge Tuesday night.

Fritz was in the Webster County Courthouse when the election results came in and he declared himself to be a in state of ''disbelief'' about his win.

''It hasn't even sunk in yet,'' he said.

''I had some really good competition,'' he added.

Fritz also said he wants to be a voice for the people.

O'Farrell said his political career likely ended with Tuesday's election.

''I'm quite surprised,'' he said. ''I'm not sure what could have caused this other than my strong concern for the beautification of the city, which is still the subject of debate for a lot of Fort Dodgers.''

Newsome congratulated the winners.

''I wish them both the best of luck," he said. " I'm sure they'll do a good job.''

Andy. I know you read this. I know you, and have worked with you. You are a thinker and consder many aspecgts of a decision. You'll do a good job. I know you have the thick skin to tolerate the ignorance of others, and accept the advice of those who offer it. Good luck.

By the way, I am soooooo not in favor of censorship. While I think "yeahAnd is a freakin moron, I do not think his comments should have been pulled from the site. just my opinion....

Congratulations on a nicely run campaign. I don't care what religion ou are- go to church, family man, hard worker, etc. Since when was that a bad thing? I have never seen so much Catholic-bashing by a poster. I hope the Messenger is deleting most of his/her rantings.

First off- Congratulations to Andy! You will never meet a more down-to-earth, family oriented, caring individual. I know Andy will do a great job on our city council and be a true voice for the citizens of Fort Dodge!

And to yeahAnd- where did you go? Appears to me from reading your posts you may be the one who should be seeking an education- I can't understand half of your posts! And watch out Andy- you may have a crazed stalker on your hands! LOL

What does a college education have to do with one's thinking ability? What does ones faith have to do with their ability to reason? Mr. Fritz will do fine on the council after understanding how our community is moving forward. Paladin -- Good to see you back.

One of the reasons Andy did not fare well in the last election in which he ran is because he was trying to finish classes in college. He is a decent hard working guy. Congrats.

i coached Fritz kid in soccer and he is just what the others have said a regular family guy, if college was a requirment then guess my idea of running in a few years is not worth the effort because i have none. but as for andy i may be wrong but i think i remember him taking some classes a few years ago out at ICCC when i was coaching his kid.

YEAHAND: It wouldnt surprise to see Andy delivering girl scout cookies someday since he has a young daughter and is very dedicated to his family. Only an uneducated idiot would believe the cathlic church has anything at all to do with girl scout cookies. I bet if a girl scout came to your door selling cookies, you would probably slam the door in her face. Oh, and let us know how your lunch with the Easter bunny goes.

YEAHAND:You seem to be an uneducated, babbling idiot. Although I know Ill never change your mind, since most uneducated, babbling idiots have a closed mind, Ill tell you a little about Andy. While I"m not a close friend of his, I had the pleasure of working with him for just a few months. You are wrong when you say he has never been in a college classroom. Judging from some of your typing errors, I"d say you need to take your own advice, and spend a little time in a classroom. The good news for you is that education can be a cure for babbling idiots, so there is help for you. Go enroll in a college course. Andy has never held a grudge against anyone based on religion, or their education level. Its people like Andy that make this country great, and people like you who stand in the way. Your anger seems personal. Maybe Andy beat you up in kindegarten or something, and thats the only thing you can think of to blame for your, pathetic, miserable failures that have followed you f

Maybe Fritz is just what Fort Dodge needs. A comman working guy raising a family. Someone with family values. Give the guy a chance and see what happens.

I guess its fair to say someone has a grudge against this Fritz guy...? LOL!

I dont know much about him, but geez, seems you should have run with so many ideas you're bringing to table and all the work you're doing to better the community...(or just throw around hate on a msg. board I guess too...)
