Haunted hallways

Former Manson school to be site of haunted house

By EMILIE NELSON Messenger staff writer
POSTED: October 29, 2009

MANSON - Ghosts and goblins will haunt the hallways and classrooms once occupied by students at the former Manson Elementary School this weekend.

The Manson Northwest Webster senior class of 2010 will open the former school building Saturday evening from 5 to 10 p.m. for the haunted house fundraiser, which will benefit the school's after prom party in the spring.

The haunted school house will feature six classrooms, each with a different theme, complete with lights, smoke, props and live spooky characters portrayed by 60 students.

"This will be their class fundraiser this year," said Lisa Lang, an associate at MNW High School. "The school let us use the old elementary building to put this on for the community."

Upon entering the haunted house, a fortune teller will greet those brave enough to take the tour. They will then be led through the darkened hallways into a body room, through Frankenstein's laboratory where they will see plenty of potions, lizards, frogs and eye of newt, into a spider and skeleton infested maze and through an alien room with black lights and neon paint.

The event will be held in conjunction with Manson's beggars night and is taking the place of a haunted house held in the yard of Sandy Sweeney's home in previous years, Stephanie Chase, whose daughter, Kennedy Spedding, is the senior class president, said. Sweeney has donated her creative skills and experience with designing haunted houses to help set up for the MNW haunted house.

"Most of what we are using was donated by Sandy from her haunted house," Chase said. "She had a haunted house in her yard on trick-or-treat night that anyone could go through if they donated a canned food item."

The haunted house will also feature an all you can eat spaghetti and "eyeballs" dinner in the multipurpose room, Halloween cookie decorating and an activity room for children. Those who bring a non-perishable food item for the food pantry will receive $1 off the price of dinner.
