Local prison job cuts in limbo

By BILL SHEA Messenger staff writer
POSTED: October 29, 2009

The jobs of 74 corrections workers in the Fort Dodge area appear to depend on the possibility of unions reaching an agreement with Gov. Chet Culver.

Those workers were to be laid off to help the Department of Corrections comply with a 10 percent across the board budget cut imposed by Culver.

But on Wednesday, Culver rejected the department's proposed cuts and called for negotiations with three unions that represent state workers: the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; Iowa United Professionals and the State Police Officers Council.

''If we cannot reach agreement with the unions, then I will implement the layoff plans submitted by these two departments,'' Culver said in a statement issued by his office. He was referring to the departments of Corrections and Public Safety.

The layoff plan would hit these local correctional sites:

  • Fort Dodge Correctional Facility - 78 positions, 51 of which are filled
  • North Central Correctional Facility, Rockwell City - 19 positions, nine of which are filled.

The community-based corrections system for the 2nd Judicial District which includes Fort Dodge would lose 14 positions. All those positions are filled.

State Rep. Helen Miller, D-Fort Dodge, said a lot of things are ''still up in the air'' for local prison workers.

''There's really nothing definitive,'' she said.

The final outcome, she said, will depend on what happens between the unions and the Culver administration.

Miller noted that the Revenue Estimating Conference, the panel which estimates how much money the state government will take in, is going to meet in December. The results of that meeting could change the budget picture again, Miller said.

I believe the only reason he turned it down wasn't because of compassion for "lost jobs", but rather because of the heat he and other Democrats are taking (even from his own party) for not seeing this problem last year when every one else could. HE'S JUST TRYING TO SAVE HIS POLITICAL BUTT!

Since part of the reason the proposal was rejected was due to the fact that most cuts were line staff, and VERY few were top or mid level management, I for one am glad Chet turned the first proposal down. The prison is already working much of their staff overtime, as there are not enough to cover each shift safely, as it is now. More cuts mean less public and staff safety.

"justwords"...I'm curious, have you ever been a member of any union? I have worked for union as well as non-union company's..Very big difference in management styles, let me tell you. As far as Gov Culver "negotiating for union concessions", it's gonna be "my way or the hiway" with good ol' chet-boy. It's also called "cover your own **s.

prosandcons, looks like you nailed it! Get rid of the admin. at FD Jail and hire one of the guys that is losin' their job at the prison, they would do a better job with their eyes closed. As for WC Sheriff, he has caused all these problems to start with!!I know I quit the FD Polceman Dept a few years back because of this sheriff. He is a very evil man!

Wheres the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ coming from. I KNOW I KNOW...... My checkbook thats where. I'm sorry the jail is a joke. If Inamtes can just walk out the front lobby door. of the jail. WHere is the security training. supervision of that incident. Sounds like a total waste of my money. SECURITY IS A HUGE PART OF A JAIL. dont sound like it is a priority here. If we house ex employees here that know the operations of the jail. HUGE SECUIRTY RISK. That must have been an oversite by the jail manager sheriff. ooopss that oversite NEARLY COST ONE CORRECTIONAL OFFICER HER LIFE NOT TO MENTION THE POTENTIAL LOSS TO THAT PERSONS FAMILY. Why did it happen ? How did it happen and who was to blame for allowing it to happen. bet you we will never get answers tot hose questions GUmmy you got any thing you can add to this post.

Seems that unions have all the deciding power these days....don't know whats worse the politicains who run everything or the unions who run everything!?! Unions cost jobs, just take the UAW for example!

More job cuts, how sad. But maybe these people can get a job at FDs new jail? Just an ideal since FD and Webster Co have all kinds of money! I hear they wanta hire 2 more deputies, and build a new jail on top of this. I have heard that WCS Dept make a comment, these guys can work at the prison but they aren't good enough to work for us! And then they just smile!!
