Sixteen Messengerland prep football teams kick off their postseason trek on Wednesday in the substate round.

All games are scheduled for 7 p.m.

Both Fort Dodge (7-2 overall) and St. Edmond (5-4) will be in action. The eighth-ranked (Class 4A) Dodgers host defending state champion Valley (5-4) inside Dodger Stadium, while the Gaels will make a three-hour trip northeast to Jackson Junction to meet No. 10 Turkey Valley (8-1).

FDSH defeated the Tigers in Week 8 at home, 24-10. The Dodgers just completed their best regular season since 1984.

In 3A, Webster City (5-4) and Jefferson-JSPC (5-4) each face stern road tests. The Lynx meet 10th-rated Ballard (8-1) and the Rams square off with Charles City (6-3).

East Sac County (3-6), Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer (8-1) and District 2 champion Eagle Grove (8-1) are all looking to make noise in 2A.

1A participants are 2008 state semifinalist and No. 4 Prairie Valley (9-0), Manson Northwest Webster (7-2) and second-ranked reigning state titleholder Emmetsburg (9-0).

Rockwell City-Lytton (6-3), No. 3 defending state champion Southern Cal (8-1) and Bishop Garrigan (6-3) highlight the Class A qualifiers.

West Bend-Mallard (3-6), second-ranked North Sentral Kossuth (9-0) and last season's state semifinalist Corwith-CWL (7-1) are set to compete in eight-man.
